Is Comparing Yourself to Others Holding You Back

Why do we glamorize other people’s lives? We watch stories through Instagram and Facebook and trick ourselves into believing our friends and the people around us have it all figured out. Somehow they have discovered the secret to a happy life filled with amazing dinners, days at the beach and a loving, supportive and hot man right by their side.

Come on! We’re smarter than that!

We’ve all experienced days when we want to curl up, throw the covers over our heads, and wish for a sign to show us the path we should take in life. Everyone has those moments of doubt. Those times when we don’t know what we’re doing with our lives and how to make sense of why things are happening the way they are.

These feelings are completely normal. And knowing this is sometimes the only thing that keeps us sane.

We all want to create a life we love. And we all have a passion we want to pursue. You watch others fiercely pursue their goals. You believe they are braver than you and they don’t have insecurities or doubts like you do. You wish you had that same courage to go after your dreams.

You do! It’s there. But it’s up to you to find it and start to believe in yourself and your ideas!

“Comparison is the theft of joy.” – Theodore Roosevelt

Do you have an idea that you’ve wanted to start, but haven’t because “someone’s already doing it”? Stop wasting your energy comparing yourself to others and simply get started!

There is a reason you have an idea you can’t stop thinking about. And the time to start doing something about it is now! What are you waiting for?

If you have given up on an idea because someone else is doing it and you can’t stop comparing your beginning to someone else’s ending, this is what I suggest:

Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

  1. Step Away from Google

Calm down. In the case of finding a new pair of shoes or tips on making the perfect meal for your next dinner party, go ahead and Google it. But when you’re thinking about whatever idea you want to pursue, leave Google alone. All you’ll end up doing is finding more people to compare yourself to and that is not cool. Think about it. There really aren’t any completely new ideas. If you have a business, website, blog or book idea, chances are there are a lot of other people already playing in that space—good for them. While seeing what else is out there is great, you’ll drive yourself crazy and most likely talk yourself out of pursuing anything, unless you make yourself stop researching and start taking action instead. Trust your ideas and go.

  1. Flexibility Isn’t Just for Yoga

Having a plan is awesome, but once you start working on a project, whatever it is, you’ll begin to see things in a whole new light. Opportunities you could have never imagined will start to pop up, so consider each one as they come, and decide how to make shifts and changes along the way to help you get to where you want to go.

  1. Chill Out

We all know there’s no such thing as an overnight success. But, often times, we forget this—especially when we look at someone else’s life. Stop comparing your beginning to where someone else is. This one is tough, but when you start comparing yourself to someone you look up to, realize they had their own unique journey that lead them to where they are. So snap out of it and get back to focusing on your path to success.

Comparing yourself to someone else is only sucking the inspiration out of your life. Stop that! You’re awesome! You have to believe that! No matter where you are in your life, now can be the start of a new beginning. Let today be the day that you start pursuing whatever dream you have been keeping locked up inside!
